Annual Medford Weekend Event Postponed Due To Weather

This charitable weekend with activities for all ages will have to wait due to an expected nor'easter.

MEDFORD, MA — Run Medford's 5K and 10K races scheduled for Saturday morning have been postponed due to expected inclement weather, organizers announced Friday.

The races were scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26, as part of the second day of the annual Run Medford weekend. Organizers said forecasts calling for heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 40 to 50 mph created concerns about conditions for runners, volunteers, staff, and public safety officials.

Run Medford organizers are working with Medford officials to identify a new date for the races, potentially in October, November or December. A new date has not yet been announced, and organizers said additional information will be shared with participants and the community once plans are finalized.

The 5K and 10K were originally scheduled to begin at 8:15 a.m. outside Medford City Hall and take runners through the city before returning to City Hall. The Saturday schedule also included the Mayor's Celebrity/VIP Mile and Para Mile at 7:45 a.m., followed by the High School Mile at 8 a.m. and a post-race celebration.

Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn, two-time World Marathon Challenge champion Becca Pizzi, WCVB meteorologist A.J. Burnett, endurance athlete John Young, WCVB sports reporter Josh Brogadir, and other local officials, athletes, media personalities, and educators were scheduled to participate in the Celebrity/VIP Mile.

Run Medford was founded in 2022 by Medford native Dave McGillivray and the Dave McGillivray Finish Strong Foundation. The annual event includes races and activities for runners of different ages and abilities while raising money for local organizations.

This year's event is benefiting Medford schools. A portion of registration fees from the Kids' Fun Runs is going toward the city's eight school PTOs, while additional donations through the Finish Strong Foundation will also support local schools.

Run Medford's weekend was scheduled to begin Friday afternoon at the Dave McGillivray Track at Hormel Stadium, with Kids' Fun Runs beginning at 5:15 p.m.
