MEDFORD, MA — The city's high school was evacuated and closed Monday morning after a strong sewage gas smell was detected inside the building, according to Medford Public Schools.
The Medford Fire Department was called to the school at approximately 11 a.m. to inspect a strong sewer smell in the B2 hallway. Shortly after, students and staff were instructed to evacuate, and the building was closed for the remainder of the day due to the sewage gas smell. No injuries were reported.
"MHS students and staff have been safely dismissed for the day," the district said in a statement. "All other schools will proceed with a normal school day."
A drain company was called to the school and was working to locate the source of a sewage backup and clear the pipes. The Medford Fire Department remained on scene Monday afternoon to monitor the situation.
Monday's after-school activities and athletics at the high school were either rescheduled, shifted to modified practices, or canceled. The district's goal is to reopen the high school for classes as scheduled Tuesday, though a final decision had not been announced as of Monday afternoon.
"Thank you to response of our students and staff during this morning's evacuation from MHS," the district said. "Students, staff, and community members were attentive to instructions and safely exited the building and site. Thank you additionally to our school transportation partners for their quick response."
