MILFORD, MA — A 3-alarm fire Thursday evening damaged a Milford warehouse that's home to a Green Mattress recycling center and an Amazon shipping center, according to local fire departments.

The fire broke out around 6 p.m. at the warehouse near the intersection of Industrial Drive and Commercial Way on the Green Mattress side. The fire reached three alarms after about 45 minutes.

No one was inside the Green Mattress facility when the fire started, but the Amazon warehouse was evacuated, according to reports. A cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

The company said the business could open next week after a cleanup.

"The fire investigation will continue today to determine the cause of the smoke, but we believe at this time it was isolated to only one small part of the facility," Green Mattress President Adam Doorly said in a statement Friday. "We believe our ongoing operating efforts were a critical factor in isolating any damages. Due to the thorough work of the local fire departments, we hope to spend the necessary time to clean up the facility and resume business as usual early next week."

Green Mattress is Milford's main mattress and box spring recycling depository. In March 2020, the town switched from a curbside mattress collection system to a new process where residents bring the bulky items to the Cedar Street transfer station. The items then go to Green Mattress to be broken down and reused.
