MILFORD, MA — The Milford Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration are partnering once again to host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, offering residents a safe and convenient way to dispose of unwanted medications.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Milford Senior Center, located at 60 North Bow St. A collection site will be set up outside the facility’s front entrance, where officers will assist residents with drop-off.
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is part of a nationwide effort led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, aimed at preventing prescription drug misuse and protecting public health.
Officials say the program targets a serious safety concern: unused or expired medications stored in home cabinets can be easily diverted, misused, or accidentally ingested. Health authorities have also warned that flushing or trashing medications can pose environmental and safety risks, prompting the creation of safe-disposal programs like this one.
During the most recent Take Back Day in October, thousands of law enforcement agencies nationwide participated. The DEA said 4,263 agencies took part over a four-hour period, collecting more than 571,000 pounds of medication at over 4,300 sites. In Massachusetts alone, 170 agencies collected nearly 24,000 pounds of unused prescription drugs.
Local officials are encouraging residents to take advantage of the upcoming event.
“Please help us in keeping our community safe from this dangerous hazard,” organizers said.
Residents can drop off prescription medications anonymously, with no questions asked.
