Finding Your Dream Summer Job

Rather than mailing or emailing your application, try going directly to the business and handing it to the manager.

With summer approaching and school coming to a close, students are more than ready to breeze through the days they have left. But with those three months of undefined freedom comes the responsibility of using them wisely.

Probably one of the most popular ways teens spend their summers is through a summer job. However, with this current economic slump finding a job may not be as easy as it used to. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for 16- to 19-year-olds — in other words, teens who wanted a job but could not find one — was 25.4 percent. That's up from 21.8 percent in April 2010.

However, there is no need to fear. Having personally sent more than 12 applications this spring, and finally getting the one I wanted, has allowed me to create a few pointers for finding your dream summer job.

1. Know your connections:

Having personal connections with employees and owners of the business you are looking to obtain a job from is key. The more they are familiar with you will help determine the amount of trust they can hold to you.

2. Hand-deliver your application:

Rather than mailing or emailing your application, try directly going to the business and handing it to them. Having that personal touch before they even look at your application can really go far.

3. Be persistent:

Take the time to make a phone call to each business you have sent your application to. Remember, the more contact you make, the bigger impression you will create.

4. Detail counts:

Make sure to take time when filling out your application. The person reviewing your application WILL notice sloppy answers and handwriting. So, make sure to take time filling out your application correctly. You don’t want them to think you can’t even take time to fill out a simple sheet of paper.

5. Create a resume:

By creating a resume, the hiring manager will have a better idea of the type of person they may be hiring. Going that extra mile can really go a long way when considering you for a position.

So, there it is: a few points to obtaining the summer job you have always wanted. Good Luck to those on a search and have a safe and healthy summer!
