Shannon Smith strikes out her 1000th batter and Milford rolls on

Shannon Smith strikes out # 1000, Milford win 7-0

In the 4th inning of the game on Friday against Oliver Ames, Shannon Smith
struck out her second batter of the inning (and 9th of the game) to record the
1000th strikeout of her pitching career for Milford High School. Smith came into
the game needing 9 strikeouts to reach the 1000 mark. She struck out 1 in the
first inning. With a comfortable lead of 2-0, compliments of a home run by Sam
Bonvino in the bottom of the first, Smith struck out the side. She struck out
the side in the 3rd inning as well leaving her just 2 shy of the mark. Taylor
LeBrun added a 3 run home run in the bottom of the third and this put Milford up
5-0 going into the 4th inning. Shannon then struck out the first 2 batters of
the 4th inning giving her number 1000. With very little celebration as is
Milford’s style, the ball was changed out by Coach Macchi, and Shannon then
retired the side with another K. After a short team meeting with the Coach, a
great moment then occurred when Shannon ran down the third base line to give her Dad Shawn the ball and a well deserved hug. Coach Brian Macchi:
“Shannon has worked so hard to earn every one of those strikeouts. The team and coaches could not be any happier for her reaching this milestone.” Fittingly, Smith ended the game with a strikeout, giving her 14 for the game and another no-hitter.

Milford bats were also hot today. Milford banged out 13 hits and getting the win with a final score of 7-0.Hitters for Milford: Lauren Hanna (single), Sam Bonvino
(3-4, double, HR, 2 rbi), Caroline Fairbanks (3-4, 2 rbi), Rachel Levine
(single), Taylor LeBrun (3-4, HR, 3 rbi), Allie Piergustavo (single, walk),
Lizzie Stallone (2-3, double).
