-Shirley M Niro says in a comment on the PATCH on Sept. 20th, that "Casinos negatively impact small businesses. Every dollar spent there, is one that is not going to local restaurants, clothing, groceries, etc.."
I responded to Ms. Niro as follows: "Shirley, I hope you have done your part and kept from buying, at a better price, clothing and other items on "mail-order" or "phone-order" and then on the Internet (Ebay, Amazon.com and even from out-of-town Internet small businesses) only to keep your local businesses going. If you did, I applaud you. But, if you looked around, your valiant solitary efforts were not enough.
Most people went for the price and even for perhaps variety and service and, today, can you really see small stores still in business, if they depended on their local patrons only? I invite you to look around.
Times change and the way we do business also change. I myself miss those times when we had a thriving downtown with really thriving businesses of every kind. It was not just a thriving downtown, but it was all along Main St. in the town. But, we have to accept that things change. They may not be the kinds of changes we want, but sometimes, change is necessary for the survival or the good economic and social health of the Town.
"A poor town will have a sad and poor social make up."
