The Friends of Adin Ballou present "Creating Community: The Women of the Hopedale Sewing Circle"

Lecture by Linda Hixon, an Archivist at Worcester State University

Despite this group’s name, these women were radical feminists ahead of their time.

They pushed for a fairer deal for women, especially in terms of equal rights and equal pay, divorce, child custody, dress reform, abolition, pacifism, and choice of last name.

One famous member, Abby Hills Price, formulated a philosophy that she brought to the 1850 National Women’s Rights Convention in Worcester, where it inspired future feminists such as Simone de Beauvoir and Betty Friedan.
