Milford Electricity Program Offers Residents More Options: What To Know

Residents in Milford can change how they receive electricity through this town-run program.

MILFORD, MA — Residents in Milford can change how they receive electricity through a town-run program that offers different pricing tiers and renewable energy options.

The program, known as Milford Community Electricity, is already available to residents and businesses as a town-vetted alternative to the default utility supply. It allows customers to choose from multiple electricity supply options while keeping the same delivery service.

Under the program, National Grid continues to deliver electricity, maintain infrastructure and send monthly bills. The change applies only to the supply portion of a customer’s bill, which is selected through the town program.

Current Program Rates

Current program rates vary by option, with the standard plan priced at about 13.55 cents per kilowatt-hour, compared with higher recent utility rates.

However, town officials note that future savings are not guaranteed, since utility rates change periodically and market conditions fluctuate.

Milford Residents Pay Above National Average

Electricity costs remain a concern for many Massachusetts households. In Milford, residents pay significantly above the national average for power, according to online marketplace EnergySage.

Residents in Milford spend about $329 per month on electricity based on utility bills shared with EnergySage, which is roughly 62 percent higher than the national average.

Municipal aggregation programs like Milford’s are designed to use collective buying power to secure competitive rates and offer more control over energy sources, including increased use of renewable power.

Milford began developing the program in 2023, with approvals and regulatory steps completed before its rollout.
