Milford Gets Its First Self-Serve Gas Station
Volta Oil's seven pump station will officially be self-serve.
MILFORD, MA— After much anticipation, Milford is getting its first self-serve gas station. Volta Oil will add self-service to their seven pump station in May, kicking things off with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The station is located at 111 Cedar St., by the Interstate 495 ramps and includes a Garrett’s Family Market convenience store and a Dunkin' drive-through and coffee shop.
The station opened in January but was not cleared to offer self-serve pumps. Volta Oil sponsored a Town Meeting article that allowed self-serve pumps in Milford. Town Meeting members approved the bylaw change in October.
After the Town Meeting approval it was a whirlwind of approvals the company had to go through before being able to offer self-serve pumps. The attorney general had to sign-off on the law change and approvals were needed from the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Board.

The official grand opening showcasing the self-serve option is set for Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday May 3 at noon. The grand opening will include free samples and giveaways, music and entertainment, and a chance to win free gas for a year, Red Sox tickets and other prizes.
The station features seven self-serve pumps and one manned full-service island per new town bylaw. It operates every day and runs 24-hours. Peter Garrett, president of Volta Oil/Garrett’s Family Market, said "We are also proud of our location visible from Rt. 495 and as one of the town’s first self-serve 24-hour gas stations."
