Milford High School Spanish Teacher Honored At Latino Educators Awards

A Milford teacher was among those recently recognized through a statewide awards program honoring Latino educators.

MILFORD, MA — A Milford High School Spanish teacher was among those recently recognized through a statewide awards program honoring Latino educators.

Lily Vasquez of Milford High School and Yvonne Fitzgerald of Millis High School were nominated by state Sen. Becca Rausch (D - Norfolk, Worcester and Middlesex) for the Latino Educators Shine Awards, which recognized 57 Latino educators from across Massachusetts for their impact in classrooms and communities, according to Latinos for Education.

Vasquez has taught at Milford High School for more than a decade, according to Sen. Rausch. She teaches AP Spanish, advises the National Spanish Honor Society and developed the Spanish for Heritage Speakers program at MHS.

Latinos for Education, a Boston-based national nonprofit, says Latino students make up 25 percent of students in Massachusetts while Latino teachers make up 5 percent of teachers statewide, according to the organization’s Massachusetts regional page.

Sen. Rausch thanked Vasquez, Fitzgerald and the other nominated educators for their leadership and dedication to students and their communities.
