Milford Swim School Raising Money For Girl's Cancer Fundraiser

How Milford's Goldfish Swim School is helping a 6-year-old cancer survivor raise money for cancer research.

MILFORD, MA — A member of the Goldfish Swim School in Milford who recently survived a bout with kidney cancer is getting a boost from her teammates. This Saturday, the school will host a swimming fundraiser for Caroline McMahan's father, who is running the Boston Marathon this year to support cancer research.

McMahan, 6, was diagnosed with a kidney tumor in 2018. She had to have her kidney removed and underwent eight months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Much of her care happened at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute's Jimmy Fund Clinic in Boston.

This year, Caroline's father, Nate, will run the Boston Marathon to support Dana Farber.

On Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., families can come use the Goldfish Swim School pool, with 100 percent of the entrance fees going to Nate McMahan's fundraiser. The event costs $10 per person or $40 per family.

There will also be other activities, like a raffle and crafts for sale. Goldfish owners Tobey and Tim Kelly will match 50 percent of whatever is raised on Saturday. A portion of snack bar sales will also go to the marathon fundraiser.

“I have run eight marathons in the past and have always loved running, but running for a cause so near and dear to my heart is incredibly humbling and inspiring," Nate McMahan said in a press release. "I am running the 2020 Boston Marathon with the Dana Farber Marathon Challenge because they saved my little girl's life and because I want to help them reach their goal of a world without cancer."

Most importantly, Caroline McMahan is now cancer free and back in the pool enjoying her swim lessons. The Milford Goldfish Swim School is located at 350 East Main St.
