The Upper Charles Trail in Milford is rails-to-trails project that follows two disused former railway lines within the town. The first section of trail - from Main St. in Milford to Rt. 495 - was opened to great fanfare in 2007. It was expanded further north to the town line with Hopkinton, and expanded eastward to the town of Holliston, in 2011. Unfortunately, these two sections of trail were discontinuous: a 1-mile gap in the trail required trail users to detour through town streets to travel end-to-end. This "missing link" was completed in 2014 totaling 6.5 miles of paved trail within Milford.
The Milford trail is just one portion of the Upper Charles Trail, which was originally envisioned by regional planners in the 1990s as a 22-mile loop of trail through Milford, Holliston, Sherborn, Ashland, and Hopkinton. Holliston, coincidently, finished their 6.5 miles of trail, which connects seamlessly with the trail in Milford. The 13 miles of trail between the two towns means that the original vision of the 22-mile loop is just over 50% complete.

The trail has become a real asset to the town of Milford, and now to the region that it's expanding into Hopkinton and through Holliston. It abuts or connects to many nearby businesses, restaurants, parks, athletic fields, and neighborhoods.
