MILFORD, MA — A national sub shop chain with more than 2,000 locations in the U.S. is planning to expand in Milford.

Jersey Mike's plans to open a new restaurant at the Milford Crossing plaza along Route 109. The sub shop would replace a former Hair Cuttery salon. The 1,200 square-foot restaurant would be located next to a Chipotle.

The owner of the Milford store, Five Star Franchises LLC, is in the process of getting approvals from the town to open. The owner has to install a grease trap to convert the former salon space into an eatery.

The Planning Board at a Sept. 7 meeting voted to postpone a hearing on the matter due to an objection from the Board of Sewer Commissioners. That board denied plans for the sub shop in August because the plans did not include a grease trap. The Planning Board will hear the matter again on Sept. 21.

Jersey Mike's has about eight sub shops in eastern Massachusetts, including nearby locations in Franklin, Marlborough and Walpole. The chain was founded in the 1950s in Point Pleasant, N.J. In 2014, the Jersey Mike's embarked on a nationwide expansion, aiming to grow to 5,000 locations.
