MILTON, MA — A new accessible walkway connecting Adams Street with Milton Station opened Thursday.
The sloped walkway is intented to provide safer, more accessible station access for commuters and residents. Interim Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng, state lawmakers, Milton officials and project team members attended the opening.
The project included designing and constructing the connection between Adams Street and the station. The total authorized budget for the project was $3.8 million, accoridng to the MBTA's current capital plan.
The improvement follows years of concerns about access from Adams Street. The town sued the MBTA in October 2022 over the agency's failure to repair a deteriorated staircase that had been closed for years. The MBTA demolished the staircase in March 2023 despite objections from town officials, CBS Boston reported.
The MBTA previously said repairing and reopening the staircase would have required an elevator, a raised platform and ultimately a full station replacement, according to a September 2022 letter to the Milton Select Board.
State Sen. William Driscoll Jr. and state Reps. Richard G. Wells Jr. and Brandy Fluker-Reid were among the officials who advocated for the improvement.
"This long-awaited improvement will provide safer, more accessible access to the station for commuters and residents," Rep. Wells said in a Thursday announcement. "I'm glad to see this project finally completed, and I thank my colleagues in government, Senator Driscoll and Representative Brandy Fluker-Reid, for their continued advocacy and partnership in this effort."
