That may sound like exactly what you need.

It is also when consumers need to be especially careful.

Officials and consumer protection agencies regularly warn that severe storms can be followed by home improvement scams, questionable contractors and high-pressure door-to-door solicitations.

The most important advice I can give homeowners is simple:

Urgency should never replace research.

Before allowing someone to begin work on your property, take a few minutes to verify who you are dealing with.

Look the company up at bbb.org and review its BBB Business Profile. Check whether licensing or registration is required for the type of work being performed. Ask for a written estimate and contract. Get multiple quotes when circumstances allow, and avoid paying the entire cost of a project before work begins.

Homeowners should also contact their insurance company directly before signing significant repair agreements or allowing a contractor to make promises about what insurance will cover.

And remember: someone knocking on your door after a storm does not automatically mean they are dishonest. But you should independently research any company before agreeing to work.

Reputable contractors understand that consumers have questions. They should be willing to explain the project, provide documentation and give you an opportunity to understand what you are signing.

If someone is rushing you, demanding immediate payment or telling you that you have to make a decision right now, consider that a warning sign.
