Court Says Michaels Can't Collect Zip Codes From Credit Card Customers
The Supreme Judicial Court ruled after a Massachusetts customers sued the Texas-based chain for collecting her name, credit card number and zip code.
The state’s highest court ruled this week that an arts and crafts chain can not collect zip codes from its credit card customers.
The suit came about when Melissa Tyler was asked for her zip code when making a purchase at the Michaels store in Everett, according to a report in Legal Newsline. Michaels has a store on Worcester St. in Natick.
Michaels had a policy of collecting customers’ name, credit card number and zip code and then used that data along with other databases to find their address. The company then sent marketing material to the customer’s home, Legal Newsline reports.
