DA: Natick Man Guilty of Rape, Harassment of Neighbor

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced on April 25, that a Natick man has been convicted by a jury of rape and harassment of his neighbor.

Shane Squires, 23, of Natick, was found guilty by a Middlesex Superior Court jury on charges of rape (three counts), criminal harassment, and carrying a dangerous weapon.  

Middlesex Superior Court Judge Heidi Brieger sentenced the defendant to five years in prison on each of the rape charges, each sentence to run consecutive to the other. On the remaining counts, the defendant was sentenced to 10 years of probation to begin at the conclusion of the period of incarceration.  

During the period of probation, the defendant has been ordered to stay away and have no contact - direct or indirect - with the victim; to submit to a sex offender evaluation and complete sex offender treatment; to register as a sex offender and to comply with the regulations of the Sex Offender Registry Board; and to be subject to and comply with GPS monitoring.

“This defendant targeted a vulnerable victim, a person he believed would not disclose the abuse to others,” Ryan said. “A jury has now held him accountable for his violent and harassing behavior.”

According to authorities, beginning in June 2012, the defendant - who was known to the victim casually as a neighbor - began to exhibit unusual behavior towards her. He would often carry a knife and nunchucks on his person. He would sit outside of the victim’s residence day and night and he videotaped her sleeping without her prior knowledge or consent. That harassing behavior quickly escalated and led, in two separate incidents, to unwanted and violent sexual contact. 

The prosecutor assigned to this case was Assistant District Attorney Kevin Ryle.  The Victim Witness Advocate was Kristin D’Agnelli.
