Don't Let Stress Control Your Life

Stress and anxiety are a part of life. They are often unavoidable and can affect our lives mildly or severely. We generally use the word “stress” to describe the feeling of being overwhelmed or in a state of emotional strain or tension. Although stress is a natural thing, the right lifestyle choices and activities can prevent it from having an effect on your health and well-being.

Here are some ideas to live a life less susceptible to stress and anxiety:

Eat healthy.
Eating a balanced and nutritious diet high in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats is best. Polyunsaturated fats include fish oil, safflower oil, and sunflower oil, which have been medically proven to support and strengthen the nervous system and brain. Alcohol is a depressant, so be sure to drink it in moderation and always drink plenty of water.

Exercise.
Exercise releases brain chemicals called endorphins, which trigger a positive feeling in the body that is often described as “euphoric.” Exercise also boosts energy levels, burns fat, helps promote better sleep, and strengthens the immune system. Exercise does not have to be intense to deliver these benefits. A short walk or bike ride will do the trick.

Get enough sleep.
Adequate sleep refuels your mind and body. Feeling tired can increase your stress level and cause you to think irrationally. Most adults require about eight hours of sleep each night. Those who are under a large amount stress may require additional sleep and rest.

Create and nurture strong relationships.
Having a network of friends and family who support you, listen to you, and are there for you can soothe even the most tremendous stress and anxiety. Having family and friends that you can depend on in times of need lessen stress and anxiety by reminding you that you are not alone during times of need.

Consider supplements.
Taking natural supplements can enhance and optimize nutrients that are essential to physical and emotional health. Fish oil, herbal, vitamin, and mineral supplements can greatly aid in easing stress and anxiety. Talk to a naturopathic doctor to make sure you are taking high-quality supplements based on your specific stress and anxiety symptoms.

Take a time out.
This can mean taking some time to relax, whether it be by reading a book, listening to music, meditating, or doing yoga. Stepping away from whatever is causing the anxiety can help to clear your head and refocus your energy in a positive direction.

Seek professional help.
Do not be ashamed to seek the help of a medical professional. Treatment varies depending on the person and can be tailored specifically for each individual. A therapist can help you to learn how to deal with the stress and anxiety by understanding the cause and helping you overcome it.

Stress and anxiety are a part of life, but there is much that can be done to keep it controlled. Be aware of your options so that you can take the right steps to maintain a healthy, happy life.
