Grant Will Allow Morse Library To 'Harness The Power Of Play'

The $10,000 grant will help the Natick library build a new children's play area.

IMLS: The Morse Institute Library was recently awarded a federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant for $10,000 from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC). The MBLC developed this direct grant program using federal funding to help libraries meet local community needs. “The Morse Institute has long recognized the power of play and its ability to bridge all that divides us. This funding provides the opportunity to make some big improvements to the existing play space for our youngest patrons and their care givers,” said Jason Homer, Director of the Morse Institute Library.

Doubling the impact of this grant, the Friends of the Morse Institute Library have generously agreed to match the grant, using funds received from a recent Middlesex Savings Bank grant to the Friends of the Library. “The love of learning starts early, so the Friends of the Morse Institute are pleased to use a gift from Middlesex Savings Bank to match this LSTA grant. We believe in play as an integral way to engage young minds and are eager to see this project come to life.” said Carol Gloff, President of Friends of the Morse Institute Library. With rotating themes like Transportation, Community Helpers, and Heroes & Magic, the Purposeful Play project will offer children curated thematic play spaces, programming, and events. “Just in time for the cold weather and lots of indoor play, we’ll host a grand opening event on Saturday, January 11th when children and their caregivers are invited to play, learn, and engage to their hearts content!” Homer said. Purposeful Play aims to engage children ages 0-6 years old, but all are welcome.

“We are proud to deliver grant funding to libraries for projects that fill unique needs of libraries across Massachusetts.” said Rob Favini, Head of Library Advisory and Development at the MBLC. “Libraries continue to be a vital resource to the communities they serve. Programs funded through LSTA grants illustrate the diverse range of topics and audiences served
by Massachusetts libraries.” LSTA is administered on the federal level by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in the Commonwealth by the MBLC. More information about LSTA can be found on the Board's website at www.mass.gov/mblc.
