Hanukkah Begins at Sundown Tuesday, Local Events Planned
A look at what's happening at two local temples during the Festival of Lights, as well as more events throughout the Greater Boston area.

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, begins at sundown Tuesday and goes until Dec. 24. The Jewish holiday commemorates the story of the Maccabean Revolt against Syrian rulers in present day Israel 2,300 years ago.

Sunday, Dec. 21, 10:30 a.m. - The family Hanukkah party is themed “Hanukkah in Israel.” Guests can take a plane ride to Israel, menorah lighting, latkes and cider and a Skype date with with friends in Ra’anana, Israel. The event is free, but please bring an unwrapped gift to donate to a child from infancy through 8 years old and/or personal care items for JSS.

Sunday, Dec. 21, 4 p.m. - This family Hanukkah party will include a friendly latke competition. Each family is asked to bring a platter of at least 25 latkes and someone will win the “Best Latkes of the Year” title. Games, crafts and family menorah lighting (remember to bring yours) are also planned. RSVP by Dec. 18 to shalom@tempbetham.org or the temple office at 508-872-8300. Families are also asked to bring an unwrapped gift to donate.
