ANSWER: Hi, Jenn! It’s ME, Wally!
Hurray! You’re having company for the holidays! My first answer would be to buy a gourmet cake that’s iced with every color of the rainbow. Line your walkway with giant lollipops and prepare buckets of shiny confetti. Fill your living room with balloons and piñatas. Streamers should cover all the walls, including bathrooms. Your front yard should have hundreds of carrots ready for harvest. Your countertops should be overflowing with bananas. … But, I know Molly would be disappointed with this answer. So allow me to think for a moment …

Molly doesn’t welcome me with lavish gifts when I jump up to her bed. She says, “Wally! I’m so happy to see you!” and begins to nuzzle my nose, ruffle my cheeks, and listens as I talk about my life. Whether I flop over and dream of strawberries or ferociously dig in her flannel sheets, Molly’s companionship makes me feel loved and admired. Her attention and acceptance warms my heart and makes my spirit sparkle.
Your presence and kindness, Jenn, is all that’s really needed to welcome your step-kids home! Ruffle their cheeks, listen to their stories, watch them flop and dig. It’s your relationship that matters most. So remember, warming your step-kids’ hearts and bringing a sparkle to their spirits really doesn’t take much more than … YOU! Sparkle on, Jenn! And from me, Wally … WELCOME HOME, step-kids!
Wally (and his mom) fields questions that range from life’s conflicts and local politics to social etiquette to general hygiene and fashion tips. If Wally thinks the question is beyond his scope of expertise, he will pass it to his administrative team.
So what say you? Have you a question for Wally? We will compile them here at Patch and feature one question and answer each week. Send your questions to charlene.arsenault@patch.com. Or post your query in the comments section.
