Natick Presidential Election Results: Trump Support Shrinks

NATICK, MA — President Donald Trump’s loss in Massachusetts on Tuesday was expected, but was it worse than his loss in 2016?

With almost 100 percent of precincts reporting on Wednesday afternoon, Joe Biden was beating Trump 66 to 32.5 percent statewide. In 2016, Hillary Clinton earned 60 percent of the vote to Trump's 33 percent.

But in Natick, Trump's share of the vote shrunk slightly. He only earned 22.76 percent of the 2020 vote compared to the 24.23 percent he earned in 2016.

The bigger turn was on the Democratic side. Biden's performance was eight points higher in Natick than Clinton in 2016, according to the unofficial results:

• Joe Biden/Kamala Harris — 15,972, 74.34 percent
• Donald Trump/Mike Pence — 4,890, 22.76 percent
• Votes cast: 21,483, 86.63 percent turnout

2016

• Hillary Clinton/Tim Kaine — 13,420, 66.77 percent
• Donald Trump/Mike Pence — 4,870, 24.23 percent
• Votes cast: 20,097, 84.3 percent turnout

Not every community in Middlesex County broke for Biden. Trump squeaked out wins in Ashby and Dracut, where he bested Biden by a mere 110 votes, according to unofficial results.

Trump had struggled to overcome polling deficits in key states in the campaign’s final days. He ran strong as expected in rural areas, but lost support among other critical voting groups, including suburban women in several battleground states.

CNN reported in October that polling put Biden up by 25 points among women. According to the final 2016 pre-election polls, Clinton won women voters by 13 points among likely voters and 14 points among registered voters.
