Natick Student Heads to Carleton College

A Natick man starts his college years at Carleton.

Lian McCarthy of Natick has enrolled at Carleton College as a member of the Class of 2019, according to a readMedia release.

Lian is the child of Conor McCarthy and Laura McCarthy.

The class of 2019 has 498 students who were selected from a pool of 6,721 applicants. The incoming students represent 46 states and 26 countries (13 percent are international residents), with 78 students coming from Minnesota, followed by California (44), Illinois (42), Wisconsin (26), Massachusetts (23), Texas and Washington (22), and New York (19). Twenty-one students hail from China.

Twenty-six percent of the students identify themselves as people of color, 12 percent are among the first generation of their families to attend college, and 71 percent graduated at the top ten percent of their high school class.

Forty-six member of the Class of 2019 are National Merit Scholars, one in a National Achievement Scholar, and six are National Hispanic Recognition Scholars. Members of the class have participated in a wide variety of extracurricular activities: 86 percent participated in community service efforts; 65 percent were members of academic clubs; 56 percent played varsity athletics; 46 percent studied music; and 41 percent had a paying job while attending high school.

One quarter of the Class of 2019 speaks a language other than English at home, including Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Filipino, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hmong, Hungarian, Igbo, Indonesian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Malayalam, Mandarin, Minangkabau, Nepali, Pangasinan, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, Tibetan, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
