Today's riddle: What do you call a one-legged Big Foot? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. New Bedford Fire Station 9 Welcomes Governor Healey (wbsm.com) — New Bedford's Fire Station 9 in the North End is poised to stay open after Gov. Maura Healey requested $1.3 million in state aid that Mayor Jon Mitchell has pledged to use to keep Engine 9 operating. The funding, part of a supplemental budget now before the Legislature, would ease pressure from the city's $32 million deficit and buy time to address long-term public safety staffing and facilities needs.
2. Celebrate Food Waste Prevention Week with the Greater New Bedford, MA Regional Refuse Management District (wasteadvantagemag.com) — New Bedford residents can take part in Food Waste Prevention Week now through October 4, with a chance to win Pyrex food storage containers from the Greater New Bedford Regional Refuse Management District. By entering online and learning simple storage and planning tips, locals can cut household food waste, save money, and reduce what ends up in the Crapo Hill Landfill.
3. In the pursuit of equity, Mass. school aid soared to $7.7 billion this year. Districts are still struggling. (bostonglobe.com) — New Bedford schools are benefiting from a major boost in state education aid, expanding pre-K, upgrading buildings, and adding staff even as MCAS scores remain below pre-pandemic levels. City leaders warn, however, that without changes to the state funding formula, rising costs and already strained municipal finances could threaten these gains in coming years.
4. M.O. L.I.F.E. Founder Charlie Murphy on 31 Years in Fairhaven (wbsm.com) — New Bedford residents in need can visit the M.O. L.I.F.E. Food Pantry in downtown every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., where it currently serves about 350 people a month. The pantry is part of a broader disability-focused nonprofit founded by Charlie Murphy, offering job support, residential services, and life-skills programs across the SouthCoast.
5. Massachusetts system for holding arrestees is fractured (newbedfordlight.org) — People arrested in New Bedford are often held at the historic Ash Street Jail, where staffing and medical limits have led the Bristol County sheriff to refuse more pre-arraignment detainees. A statewide review shows Massachusetts has a patchwork of policies for housing arrestees, leaving local police and taxpayers juggling costs, hospital trips, and responsibility when jails turn people away.
