• 'Birdnado incoming' in Newburyport (boston.com) — Thousands of tree swallows recently formed a dramatic "birdnado" over Newburyport's Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island, stunning viewers in a video shared by federal officials. The swirling flock, part of fall migration, briefly turned the sky into a living tornado as the birds paused here to rest and feed on berries and insects.
• Shellfish Harvesters Awarded $300K Relief After 12-Day Sewage Discharge Closure (patch.com) — Newburyport-area shellfish beds affected by this summer's Merrimack River sewage spill are part of a $300,000 state relief package for North Shore harvesters who lost nearly two weeks of work. The Division of Marine Fisheries has since reopened key areas after testing, and new rules in nearby Plum Island Sound could add many more open harvesting days each year.
