As many of you know by now, the New England Mobile Book Fair changed hands during the week of Thanksgiving. My name is Tom Lyons and I am very excited about continuing the legacy of this Newton, MA institution. Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend I had a chance to meet many new and long time patrons of the Book Fair. It's great to hear the positive comments and general buzz about the store continuing to be here for dedicated book lovers. Many have also shared their ideas for improvements, so I'd like to share our plans for the future.
While I am learning the internal workings of the store, I am also working to determine what steps need to be taken and in what sequence. As you would expect, there won't be time to make significant changes during the holiday season, but we are making small investments of time and effort to improve some of our processes and to change displays and signage. Starting in January, our intention is to address the two things most often mentioned by customers and staff - computerizing and restructuring the inventory to facilitate easier access to more titles within genre. I ask our patrons to be patient with us. Being perhaps the largest independent book store in New England with an inventory of over a million books, transitions will take time, but we will be working toward enhancing our web site, improving overhead lighting, planning events and becoming more involved in community projects such as book clubs and children's programs.
