Annual Artistic Event Is Back In Newton

Newton Open Studios is a citywide event that brings artists and the public together through open studios and group exhibitions.

NEWTON, MA — The city's Open Studios is set to return on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 for its 30th year, continuing a decades-long tradition of connecting local artists with the community through a citywide network of exhibitions and studio spaces.

More than 90 artists are expected to participate in this year’s event, showcasing work in locations across Newton ranging from private studios and homes to shared exhibition venues. The event features a variety of artistic mediums, such as painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, fiber arts, jewelry, wearables, and home décor.

According to organizers, the event is designed to allow visitors to engage directly with artists while exploring artwork outside of traditional gallery settings.

“What distinguishes Newton Open Studios is its emphasis on direct engagement,” organizers said in a statement. “Visitors are invited not only to buy and view artwork but to meet artists in person, gaining insight into process, material, and intent.”

This year’s event will include expanded group exhibition sites in addition to individual artist locations, creating more centralized spaces for visitors while maintaining the decentralized structure that has defined Newton Open Studios for decades.

Organizers said visiting artists’ personal studios and workspaces is meant to offer attendees a more intimate look into the creative process behind the work on display.

“Newton Open Studios has always been about access—to artists, to process, and to the experience of art in everyday spaces,” Newton Open Studios Director Claudia Fiks said. “At a time when the art world can feel increasingly mediated, this event offers something direct and grounded: the opportunity to encounter artists and their work without barriers.”

Artwork will be available for purchase directly from participating artists, with organizers noting that pieces will be offered at a range of price points intended to appeal to both first-time and experienced collectors.

Visitors will also be able to use an interactive online map to navigate the event by artist, medium, or location across Newton neighborhoods.

The annual event is free and open to the public.
