NEWTON, MA — Officials announced Monday that Crystal Lake and the lap pool at the Gath Pool Complex will be closed for at least one week because of separate health and safety concerns.
Crystal Lake was closed after cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms were detected in the water. According to city officials, the algae can produce toxins that may cause illness in people and pets through ingestion, skin contact or inhalation of water.
Residents are being advised not to swim, boat, or allow pets near the lake while the closure remains in effect. Anyone who comes into contact with the water should rinse off immediately. Season passes for Crystal Lake will be honored at Gath Pool during the closure.
The announcement comes as much of Massachusetts continues to experience drought conditions. Cyanobacteria often develops in freshwater lakes and ponds during hot, dry periods when water becomes stagnant.
Meanwhile, the lap pool at the Gath Pool Complex was closed after security cameras recorded a group of people setting off fireworks and throwing a beer bottle over the fence into the facility shortly after midnight this past Sunday, according to city officials.
When staff arrived Sunday morning, they found broken glass on the pool deck, in the lap pool gutters, at the bottom of the pool and near a picnic area.
The city said the lap pool must be drained, cleaned, power washed and refilled before reopening, a process expected to take about a week. The regular pool and splash pad area will remain open during that time.
