NEWTON, MA — Two new murals now cover the exterior of the Crystal Lake Bathhouse as part of Spark Newton's latest public art project.
The nonprofit commissioned Boston-based muralist Ruby Rose to create the pair of 8-foot-by-8-foot murals through its Public Art Initiative before donating them to the City of Newton. Inspired by Crystal Lake and Levingston Cove, the artwork combines recognizable local scenery with imaginative underwater scenes celebrating one of the city's most popular recreational areas.
The large-scale murals depict familiar activities including swimming, fishing, biking, picnicking and gathering along the shoreline while incorporating whimsical details intended to give visitors something new to discover each time they view the artwork.
Rose is a Boston-based muralist, illustrator and designer whose work explores themes of community, place and everyday life. Over the past decade, she has completed more than 30 murals across Massachusetts and is known for colorful, story-driven artwork rooted in local identity.
"As a premier Boston area mural artist, Ruby's imaginative work is brilliant, colorful, and full of energy," Spark Newton Public Art Committee Chair Dinny Starr said. "The murals are a terrific addition to Newton's growing creative landscape, fostering connection, economic vitality, and community engagement."
The installation is the latest addition to Spark Newton's Public Art Initiative, which partners with artists to create permanent works in shared public spaces throughout the city. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stop by Crystal Lake this summer to view the murals.
Spark Newton, formerly known as Newton Community Pride, rebranded in 2025 after more than 35 years serving the city. The organization presents community arts and cultural events throughout the year while supporting public art projects across Newton. The mural installation also comes as the city continues expanding its investment in the arts following the creation of Newton's first standalone Arts and Culture Department earlier this year.
