She discusses staff reductions, the new Math Pathways rollout, AI in classrooms, upcoming union contract talks, state audits, and early exploration of an alternative high school to better serve students with complex needs.
2. Nonprofit Spoonfuls prevents food waste and feeds those in need (figcitynews.com) — A Newton-based nonprofit, Spoonfuls, is ramping up food recovery to support local partners such as the Newton Food Pantry as SNAP cuts drive more residents to seek help. The group's ServSafe-certified staff collect unsold food from over 120 donors daily and redistribute it the same day, now preventing about 140,000 pounds of food from going to waste each week across Massachusetts.
3. Jason Rosenberg, longtime advocate for Newton's disabled, dies at 81 (wickedlocal.com) — Newton is remembering Jason Rosenberg, an attorney and disability-rights champion who helped shape the city's Commission on Disability and advised multiple local boards. Despite childhood polio and the later loss of his daughter in the 2001 Oak Hill bus tragedy, he spent decades pushing for accessibility, justice, and city projects funded by disability-related fines before moving to California and passing away at 81.
4. Officials identify 2nd human West Nile virus case in Massachusetts this year (masslive.com) — Newton is now classified at high risk for West Nile virus, along with several nearby cities, after two human cases were confirmed in Middlesex County and numerous infected mosquito samples were found statewide. Health officials say Massachusetts is in peak mosquito season and urge residents, especially older adults and those with weakened immune systems, to take precautions against mosquito bites.
