Today's riddle: How do billboards talk? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Newton holds solemn ceremonies to honor victims, survivors of Oct. 7th terror attacks in Israel (figcitynews.com) — Newton residents gathered Wednesday for two solemn ceremonies, in West Newton and on Newton Centre Green, to honor victims, hostages, and survivors of the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks in Israel. Local clergy, veterans, and community leaders spoke about grief, antisemitism, and resilience while attendees sang, prayed, and held candles in a strong show of support for Newton's Jewish community.
2. For Mochiko Hawaiian BBQ in Newtonville, Aloha means 'Goodbye' (newtonbeacon.org) — If you've been craving Mochiko's fried chicken in Newtonville, the Walnut Street spot has quietly closed and isn't coming back. Owners say they're now focusing solely on the Brighton location, leaving Newton residents without the popular Hawaiian BBQ lunch option that had anchored the village center since 2022.
3. Newton MCAS scores increase slightly, but Black and Brown students remain behind (newtonbeacon.org) — Newton Public Schools students posted slightly higher MCAS scores last year, with local classes generally outperforming statewide averages in English, math, science, and civics. But the data show Black, Hispanic or Latino, low-income, and English learner students in Newton still trail far behind their White and Asian peers, prompting a planned school committee discussion on how to address these gaps.
4. A story of hope: Former hostage, survivor share stories at Newton temple (figcitynews.com) — Temple Shalom in Newton recently hosted former hostage Eliya Cohen and survivor Ziv Abud, who shared harrowing yet hopeful accounts of enduring the Hamas attacks at the Nova Music Festival. Speaking to a packed local audience, they described captivity, faith, and family as sources of strength, ending the evening with prayers, songs, and a message about resilience and hope.
5. Demon Deacons Earn 2-1 Road Win at Boston College (godeacs.com) — Boston College men's soccer fell 2–1 to Wake Forest Friday night at Newton Campus Field, despite a late goal that briefly tightened the match. For Newton-area fans, it was a chance to see high-level ACC play locally, as Wake Forest scored twice early in the second half and then held off the Eagles' final push.
