17 Nonprofits, $143,350 In Grants: Rebecca Pomroy Foundation Invests In Newton’s Community

From youth mentoring to mental health care, the foundation's latest grants support vital programs for Newton residents.

NEWTON, Mass. — Big dreams, stronger communities and a little more help when it matters most: that's what $143,350 in new grants will help make possible across Newton.

The Rebecca Pomroy Foundation has awarded funding to 17 organizations serving Newton residents, supporting everything from youth mentoring and music education to mental health services, affordable housing and legal assistance for survivors of domestic violence.

Each organization has its own mission, but they share a common goal: making life a little better for the people who call Newton home.

And there's good news for other local nonprofits hoping to make a difference. The foundation will open applications for its next grant cycle in January 2027, with applications due March 1.

"This year's grants go to seventeen organizations, and they're doing very different kinds of meaningful work: art therapy, legal aid for domestic violence survivors, summer camp scholarships," said Amy Worth, president of the Rebecca Pomroy Foundation. "We're proud to stand behind all of them."

From marathon miles to music lessons, grants make a difference

So, what does that support look like in real life?

For a high school student, it might mean having a mentor by their side while training for a marathon through Dreamfar High School Marathon. For a young musician, it could mean receiving tuition assistance to take lessons at All Newton Music School.

For a college student navigating higher education without a family safety net, support from The Wily Network can help make the path forward feel less overwhelming.

Other grants will help the New Art Center provide expressive arts therapy and give preschool-aged children access to summer day camp through financial assistance at the West Suburban YMCA.

These programs may look different, but they all help open doors — whether that means discovering a new talent, finding a trusted adult, getting access to essential services or simply having a safe and supportive place to belong.

Meet the 17 organizations receiving grants

This year's recipients work across a wide range of needs in the Newton community, supporting children, teens, adults, families and people with disabilities.

Youth, mentoring and education

Health, wellness and essential support

Housing and community connections

Together, these organizations address a broad range of needs, from helping a child find their musical voice to supporting a family through a difficult time. Their work also reflects the importance of local programs that bring people together and help residents feel supported in their own community.

A foundation with deep Newton roots

The Rebecca Pomroy Foundation's story stretches back more than 150 years.

Its roots lie in the Newton Home for Orphan Girls, established in 1872 by Rebecca Pomroy, a Civil War nurse who served as superintendent of the home and cared for members of President Abraham Lincoln's family.

Today, the foundation continues that legacy by supporting charitable organizations serving the Newton community. It funds health, education and recreation programs for people of all ages, with special preference for organizations providing training, education and counseling for girls and young women in need, as well as organizations operating community centers in Newton.

Its latest round of grants carries that mission forward, helping local organizations reach more people and continue the work that matters to them.

Newton nonprofits: Your next opportunity starts in January

Does your nonprofit serve Newton residents and share the foundation's commitment to health, education or recreation? The next grant cycle could be an opportunity to turn a promising idea into meaningful community impact.

Applications will be available in January 2027 and must be submitted by March 1, 2027.

Nonprofits can review grant guidelines and application information at pomroy.org. Questions can be sent to pomroyfoundation@gmail.com.

For the 17 organizations receiving funding this year, the grants represent more than dollars. They're an investment in the people they serve — and in a Newton community where more residents have the chance to learn, grow, connect and thrive.
