During the spring little league season we are posting articles written by young Newton sports writers. This story was written by Owen Perry at Cabot school.
Mayor Setti Warren threw out the first pitch at the opening day parade on Sunday May 4th. A few hours later, the Giants got a dominant win. While many good lessons were learned by the A’s in their loss. Lessons they can apply in the future.
On the first pitch of the game, the Giants got a double hit by Matthew Britt-Webb and then a home run from Declan Gulley. The Giants had a 12-0 lead at the end of 2 innings. In the 3rd inning, the A’s changed their pitcher from Nate Bourgoin to Aidan Auclair as the A’s started to throw strikes but the Giants kept their cool. Andrew Norton from the Giants hit a popup double to begin the inning. Jeremiah Poole hit a triple with 2 runs scored. The Giants got a grand slam hit by Ken Shechter as they scored 6 more runs to end the third.

The A’s had to change their pitcher in the 4th inning. New pitcher Michael Tivnan came out to the mound and the A’s started getting it together only letting 2 runs go by. The A’s really had trouble throwing strikes earlier in the game. It got a little better as the A’s started to get outs quicker and throw more strikes. But the Giants hit a two run homer hit by Drew Temel. Pitching for the giants went very well. They only had to change their pitcher once Jeremiah Poole who was pitching most of the game did well on the mound he threw a lot of strikes and there were not very many walks or hits. The A’s Nate Bourgoin scored 1 run in the 5th inning to end the game but it was too little too late.
After the game, I spoke with Giants manager Andrew Miller. He said “I thought our hitting was terrific!” He thought Jeremiah Poole threw a lot of strikes. He also said he doesn’t want his team to think they are the best just after one game. I also spoke with A’s manager Tom Bourgoin. He said “ It’s early in the season and we have a lot of things to work on.” He said most of his players had their head down after they would strike out or not catch a ball. He was upbeat and noted he has had teams have a rough start but then they have come back to win it all.

In summary, it was a good win for the Giants. They really played well. But there were also many good lessons learned for the A’s in their loss that they can apply in the future.
