Boston Man Charged With Vandalizing Newton Jewish Community Center

Newton police said the man tore down blue ribbons on trees lining the property on Tuesday and is accused of harassing JCC members.

NEWTON, MA — A Boston man accused of tearing down ribbons on the Newton Jewish Community Center this week and previously harassing Jewish community members in the area is facing vandalism and assault charges, according to Newton police.

Police said on Tuesday afternoon they were called to the Nahanton Street property for a report of the man tearing the blue ribbons down from trees lining the property. Police said they located the 49-year-old man from Boston and charged him with defacing property.

Police said an ensuing investigation identified the same man as the driver of a white SUV who was accused of harassing and intimidating Jewish community members walking in the area on April 30.

Police said the man was then also charged on Thursday with assault for the purpose of intimidation, assault with a dangerous weapon and violation of Constitutional rights.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Newton District Court.
