Justin Chere took to the mound for the Royals Wednesday night making his first career RRBL start and was nothing short of impressive. The Royals had suffered two straight losses and looked to bounce back against the Brewers who were looking for their first win of the season.
Right out of the gate the Royals jumped on top in the first inning. An error, a hit by pitch, and a walk loaded the bases for the Royals and with two outs, a couple wild pitches and a passed ball allowed all three runners to score. Two additional walks put a couple men on base for Chere who helped his own cause by roping a single into left center field scoring two more for the Royals capping a 5 run first inning.
The Royals tacked on three more runs in the top of the second. Right fielder Tyler Scionti collected his first hit of the 2013 season leading off the inning with a single to center field. Shortstop Jeremy Hartman singled and Second baseman Colin Walsh walked loading the bases for Scott Weber who smacked a double over the left fielder's head clearing the bases. The Royals got an RBI single from Walsh in the third inning and another RBI single from Center fielder Dan Pelberg in the fourth putting them up 10-0.

But the story of the night was Chere who carried a perfect game into the fifth inning retiring 13 in a row to start the game. With one out in the fifth, Brewers Shortstop Peter Barcam singled to center field collecting the only hit of the night for the Brewers. Chere only allowed two baserunners over 5 innings of work and earned his first win as a starter. He finished the night allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and five strikeouts. Nick Smith pitched two scoreless innings of relief securing the shutout for the Royals.
The Royals take on the Waltham Nationals at Nipper Maher Park in Waltham this Sunday June 9th at 5pm.
