Royals Fall to Cubs in Extra Innings

Newton Royals game recap June 23, 2013

The Newton Royals took on division rival the Boston Cubs on Sunday looking to pick up a game in the standings in what is turning into a tight division race.  The Royals were a game and half back in the standings behind the Cubs entering Sunday.  Royals Pitcher Nick Smith made his first RRBL start as the Cubs countered with Afshin Chaharmahalian.

The Cubs jumped on the board in the top of the first inning when Shortstop Nick Runyan ripped a two out double scoring the first run.  Mike Ray followed with an RBI single putting the Cubs up 2-0.  The Royals quickly got those two back in the bottom of the first as Third baseman Justin Chere and Left fielder Joe Cloutier both singled to start the inning.  Three batters later, Second baseman Bryan Weber reached first on an errant throw by Runyan alowing Chere and Cloutier to score.

A pitcher's duel ensued for 6 innings following as both starters shut down the hitters pushing the game into extra innings.  After Ray doubled to lead off the inning, he came around to score on an error by Royals Shortstop James O'Neil.  The Cubs then loaded the bases and with one out, Right fielder Tyler Dutton singled home two more runs.  Two batters later, Second baseman Devin Donahoe singled home another pair of runs putting the game out of reach for the Royals.  The Cubs scored six runs in the eight inning and went on to win 8-2.
