
The Newton Royals were looking to rebound from last weeks loss as they headed up to Salem to take on the Northshore Giants at Palmer Cove Field. The two teams battled rain showers all game but it would hold off just enough for the Royals and Giants to complete their Mother's Day match up. With a combination of timely hitting and slick defense, the Royals would come out on top.The Royals struck first in the top of the third inning when Second baseman Colin Walsh ripped a double over the head of Giants Left fielder Andrew Saltzman to score the Royals' first run. Joe Cloutier drove in the second run with a sac fly and an RBI single by Third baseman James O'Neil would cap a three run inning for the Royals. Rookie First baseman Scott Weber had a breakout game going 3-4 and driving in three of the Royals' six runs including a two run single with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh inning which gave the Royals a couple insurance runs against the hard hitting Giants team. The Royals scattered 10 hits during the game tying a season high. Giants rookie Starting pitcher Jeff Fucarile went 6 innings giving up four runs (three earned) on 8 hits while walking one and striking out two.Royals Starting pitcher Jimmy Selig held the Giants to three hits and no runs over seven innings of work. Selig got some help from his defense which has been outstanding all year as the Royals infield turned three double plays during the game The Giants hit the ball hard but the Royals defense seemed to be in the right place at the right time.The Royals improved to 3-1 on the season and will be taking on division rivals the Cambridge Thunder next Sunday May 19th at Buckingham Browne & Nichols in Cambridge.
