Bruce Chabner, MD, Inducted into American Association for Cancer Research 2015 Class of Fellows Academy
Newton Resident Honored at Event in Philadelphia
The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) inducted Bruce Chabner,MD, Clinical Director, Emeritus of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center along with 10 other luminaries in the field of cancer research at their annual meeting. This distinguished award is the highest honor bestowed by the AACR and one of the most recognized honors in the scientific community of cancer research and cancer-related biomedical science.
Dr. Chabner has had extensive experience in the field of cancer drug discovery and development. During his 27 year career in the Public Health Service at the National Cancer Institute, he served as a Senior Investigator in the Laboratory of Chemical Pharmacology, Chief of the Clinical Pharmacology Branch, Director of the Clinical Oncology Program and Director of the Division of Cancer Treatment.
At the NCI, he maintained and active laboratory program in cancer pharmacology, and led the development of taxol. His research contributed significantly to the development of high dose regimens for osteosarcoma, and to standard therapies for lymphoma and Hodgkin Disease. He joined the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in 1995 as Clinical Director of the MGH Cancer Center and Chief of Hematology and Medical Oncology. He became the center’s Associate Director of Clinical Sciences in 2000, and continues to serve on its executive commitee.

Dr. Chabner is a senior editor for The Oncologist and serves on the executive advisory boards for some of the industry’s leading innovators in drug development. In 2006, Dr. Chabner received a presidential appointment to the National Cancer Advisory Board by the NCI and served as its chairman from 2010 to 2012. In 2014, the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) also recognized Dr. Chabner as a founder and a visionary and illustrious researcher for his outstanding contributions to the field of oncology over the last fifty years.
Dr. Chabner continues his work daily at the Mass General Cancer Center as an Allen Distinguished Investigator. He is involved with mentoring, grant development, global health and community outreach.

Dr. Chabner is a native of Shelbyville, IL and a 1957 graduate of Shelbyville High School . He graduated summa cum laude from Yale University in 1961 and from Harvard Medical School in 1965. He and his wife Davi-Ellen are the parents of two children and five grandchildren. They reside in Newton, MA and are part-time residents of Nantucket, MA where he is a board member of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital.
