The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newtonma.gov/government/health-human-services/commissions/human-rights-commission/-fsiteid-1#!/" rel="nofollow noopener">Newton Human Rights Commission</a> is pleased to partner this year with the Celebration of Queer Culture (CQC) Planning Committee to host a shared Pride Month event in Newton.
Newton Celebrates Pride Month will take place on Wednesday, June 3 from 5-7:30pm at Newton City Hall (1000 Commonwealth Ave.). The celebration will be on the south lawn; in case of rain, it will move indoors inside City Hall. Join the celebration for food, art, and resources. All are welcome at this free, family-friendly event!

Each year, the <a href="https://newtonartassociation.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Newton Art Association</a> welcomes submissions from members who have joined the association within the past year for their New Members Show. There is a wide variety of work from a diverse array of artists using different mediums, exploring different subject matter, and using different techniques. Visit and see what your talented neighbors have been working on!

The reception will be held on Thursday, May 14th from 6 to 8pm. This event is free to attend and is an opportunity to view the artwork and meet some of the artists!

The Newton Art Association seeks to encourage the appreciation and expression of fine arts to our membership and the Newton community. We are an organization of over 200 active artists and art enthusiasts, representing all branches of the visual arts, from drawing to sculpture. The majority of members live in Newton, nearby cities, and elsewhere in New England. The Newton Art Association was founded in 1949 by the late James King Bonnar and a small group of artists who felt that artists needed the support of each other to share ideas, techniques and opportunities to paint together.

Join Mother Brook Arts &amp; Community Center on Thursday, May 14, from 7 to 9 PM for an exclusive first look at our Art in Bloom exhibition and the opportunity to purchase original artwork before the exhibition opens to the public.
This special Preview Party is both a celebration and an important fundraiser supporting Open Studios and Mother Brook Arts &amp; Community Center’s free community arts programming. Your attendance helps sustain accessible creative experiences for our community.
The evening will feature live music performed by Steve Fell, complimentary bites, and the opportunity to meet the participating artists. Passion, politics, and pulse-pounding rhythm collide! Martín Palmeri’s “Misatango” electrifies the Latin Mass with fiery Argentinian “new tango,” blending chorus, bandoneón, and strings in a bold, emotional ride that has energized audiences on several continents. By embedding tango’s harmonic language, rhythms, and melodic designs in the orchestra, Palmeri frees the chorus to simply “sing the Mass”, plunging the audience into a world of uplifting emotions, passion, and syncopation.
Opening the concert is Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah by Alberto Ginastera, an intense work written in exile in 1946. Setting Latin texts from the Book of Lamentations and with dissonant harmonies, jagged rhythms, and stark contrasts, Ginasteri’s music expresses profound sorrow and spiritual desolation.
Adding to the verve of the Latin American program are scintillating dance performances by Boston-based tangueros, curated by bandoneonist Alex Roitman and accompanied by a tango instrumental ensemble. Celebrating over 90 years of excellence in fashion education, The School of Fashion Design is the only educational institution in New England dedicated exclusively to the study of fashion design. SFD provides students with a solid foundation in apparel design and construction, and the skills required for a successful career in fashion. Our technical Certificate program is taught by experts in the field of fashion design. Students may take courses toward the Certificate or on a class-by-class basis to fill professional education interests. For creatives and textile arts enthusiasts, SFD offers workshops in various fiber arts such as weaving, lace making, embroidery, millinery, upcycling, and more.
