Rt 9 Crash In Newton Prompts Hazmat, Shuts Down Road For 8 Hours

After a three car crash on Rt. 9 eastbound, that stretch of the road was closed to contain a hazmat situation and fix a pole.

NEWTON, MA — A three car crash on Route 9 eastbound between Parker and Langley streets shut down the roadway for eight hours Tuesday, as a hazmat team worked to contain a leaking transformer that was damaged, according to Police.

A 24-year old man from Boca Raton, FL, was taken to Faulkner Hospital with injuries police described "non-incapacitating."

The damage knocked out power to some 100 customers, according to Eversource.

Around 1:20 p.m. State Police said a call came in about the crash where one of the cars appeared to have struke a pole. That pole was laying across the roadway when police arrived. It took MassDOT crews until around 9:30 p.m. to right the situation. At 9:38 p.m. State police tweeted that Rt. 9 was reopened.

A detour took cars along Parker to Dedham Street and then over to Brookline and Hammond Street or over to Hammond Pond Parkway.
