Descendant of 19th Century Newton Mayor Becomes Newton-Wellesley Pianist

Joe Pulsifer volunteered to play at the hospital after being treated at its Vernon Cancer Center.

NEWTON, MA – Newton-Wellesley Hospital's newest pianist is not only an accomplished musician, but a local whose family ties intersect with Newton's rich history.

Joe Pulsifer is the great-grandson of Royal Pulsifer, a 19th century Newton mayor and founder of the Newton Cottage Hospital.

The 88-year-old performs Friday mornings in the hospital's West Lobby and volunteered after receiving treatment at Newton-Wellesley's Vernon Cancer Center.

Pulsifer has four decades of experience teaching and performing music, which the hospital described as "beautiful" in a Facebook post.
