Art Exhibit Reception: Images in Thread – Small Quilts and Still Lifes by Julia Arnett

Come to the Newton Free Library for the reception of the art exhibit Images in Thread – Small Quilts and Still Lifes by Louise Weinberg, which will be on display this month in the Main Hall.  The pieces in Arnett’s show emerged from her long-standing interest in quilt-making as an opportunity to play with color and pattern. Moving beyond the idea of quilting as a craft in the design and needlework tradition, she began to try to find other ways to use fabric to assemble color and pattern. Starting with the classic free-lace technique, the artist adds bits of fabric to the usual array of ribbons and yarns. In addition to creating miniature quilts, she has also “painted” a number of still-life and animal images that lend themselves to the technique.

Images in Thread: Small Quilts and Still Lifes will be on view in Main Hall from January 4 to 30. All are welcome to attend an opening reception which will be held on Monday, January 9 at 7 p.m.
