Come to the Newton Free Library for a performance by Shir Madness, who will perform traditional Jewish music. Klezmer music incorporates folk tunes and styles from Russia, the western Mediterranean, Romania and its Gypsy roots. From the soulful solo doinas used as the introduction to a medley of dance tunes to show off an instrumentalist's virtuosity, to the dance forms that were popular in Eastern Europe and in the U.S. in the early part of the twentieth century, Shir Madness performs them all.
They will perform pieces written in Klezmer style by their clarinet player Richard Yospin and Jewish favorites such as: Epstein Nigun by Max, Julius and William Epstein, Abi Gezunt! by Abraham Ellstein and Molly Picon, Bulgar ala Naftule by Naftule Brandwein, and Sadeguer Khusedl by Abe Schwartz.
