NEWTON, MA — Fall River has released a statement in support of joining Newton, Brookline, and the rest of the Fourth Congressional District as proposed in the latest draft of the congressional map.

The draft redistricting, conducted in the wake of the 2020 census, has lasted for six months and hundreds of residents have testified. On Nov. 1, the Joint Committee on Redistricting released a proposed new map that unites all of Fall River under the blanket of the Fourth District.

"There were 20 hearings, where residents and communities weighed in, and the committee heard
repeatedly that Fall River is best represented as a unified city," said a news release from the City of Fall River.

"After two decades of waiting, this map honors that imperative," it continues. "Fall River will be the biggest city in the Massachusetts Fourth and will no longer stand in any community's shadow or be second to another community's needs — it will stand as its own city, not as part of a region, and will be front and center for its U.S. Representative to champion."

The city also applauded the work of Fourth District Rep. Jake Auchincloss, noting that he has built strong relationships in Fall River and advocated for funding for water infrastructure, urban renewal, and public safety.
