Five Things you Need to Know Today: Feb. 21

The Board of Aldermen meet, a liquor license hearing and the anniversary of a tragic fire.

1. Board of Aldermen. The Board of Aldermen will meet tonight at 7:45 p.m. in the chamber at City Hall. Following the School Committee's approval of the Angier Elementary feasibility study, the board is expected to vote on a similar resolution tonight. 

2. Liquor license hearing. The Board of License Commissioners is set to meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. in room 209 at City Hall. The board is scheduled to discuss a liquor license application for the Star Market in Chestnut Hill. There has been some opposition to this liquor license from local residents and business owners. 3. Newtonville business association meetup. Do you live in Newtonville or own a business in Newtonville? A local group is trying to form a Newtonville Business Association and is looking for opportunities to network. If you're interested, a meetup is scheduled for tonight at 8:30 p.m. at Cabot's Ice Cream. More information is also available on this meetup site.

4. Historic Newton vacation week programs. The Jackson Homestead and Museum will offer two vacation week programs this week on Tuesday and Thursday. Today's program, The MA 54th: A Black Regiment in the Civil War, starts at 2 p.m. and is $20/family ($15 for members). However, pre-registration is required. If you're interested in Thursday's program, From Slavery to Freedom, the price is the same. Call 617-796-1450 to register.

5. Four-alarm fire. Today marks the one year anniversary of the tragic four-alarm fire that destroyed a home on Waverley Avenue in Newton Corner and took the life of award winning producer Beth Deare.
