Five Things You Need to Know Today: March 23
A local music event, book donation information and "unplugged" activities.

1. Newton unplugged and connected. The month of March is Unplugged and Connected Month here in Newton. Kids and families are encouraged this month to take a break from homework, unplug electronics and connect with friends and family. Today from 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. the will host an "Spring in My Backyard" unplugged activity in the art room. For a full list of local activities for unplugged month, check out this calendar.
2. Scholar in residence. will host a weekend of events (starting tonight) with this year's scholar in residence, Dr. Alick Isaacs. The weekend will include discussions, Torah study and a Sunday breakfast. .
3. BC bOp! 's instrumental and vocal jazz ensemble, BC bOp! will perform tonight in the annual Robsham Concert. The "GhostbOp!sters" concert will feature both big band and vocal jazz music. The concert starts at 8 p.m. in the Robsham Theatre and tickets are $15; $10 with a Boston College ID.

4. Book drop. GotBooks Inc. will be conducting a used book drive in Newton on April 4 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the deadline to register for a pick-up is March 28. GotBooks will be collecting unwanted books, DVDs, audio books and CDs and will pick up for free from your home or office. There is a minimum of 50 items per pick up.
5. DCR mooring lottery. According to a press release from the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the department began accepting applications on Monday, March 21 for the spring's mooring lottery. The lottery will award 60 public mooring spots in the Charles River. The mooring locations are available for private recreation boats up to 35 feet long and are awarded for one season.
