Five Things You Need to Know Today: May 1

An annual event for seniors at Lasell College, a chance to meet a vice principal candidate and a roundtable discussion with the mayor.

1. CDBG roundtable. Mayor Setti Warren on Community Development Block Grant Funding today. The discussion will be held at and starts at 11:15 a.m.

2. Lasell torchlight parade. Hundreds of graduating seniors from will participate in the annual torchlight parade around campus. According to a press release issued by Lasell, seniors will offer remarks and hand their torches to underclassman in a gesture that symbolizes the passing of experience and knowledge to a new generation. The parade will begin at the college’s central parking lot (behind 1844 Commonwealth Ave.) at 7:30 p.m.

3. Talking to your child about sexual assault. The Newton Partnership will offer on what to say to your child about sexual assault, and how to teach him/her about appropriate and inappropriate touching. The discussion will be held at and starts at 7 p.m.

4. Meet a vice principal finalist. will welcome Midge Connolly today . Connolly will meet with faculty, staff and members of the North community this morning in the International Cafe at 7:30 a.m. In a letter sent to the community last night, North Principal Jennifer Price invited parents and the community to attend and offer feedback on Connolly. The second finalist, Steve Martin, will meet at the same time tomorrow.

5. Police promotion. Newton Police Sgt. Sean C. McLean was promoted yesterday at in Mayor Setti Warren's office. McLean is a 10-year veteran of the Newton Police Department and serves as a mentor and Field Training Officer for his peers. Patch will post more information on this promotion shortly!
