Five Things You Need to Know Today: May 11

A book & author luncheon, an open mic and big events at the two high schools.

1. Open Mic Night. The will host an tonight from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. The free event will include music, raffles, giveaways and more. For more information, contact Kevin O’Connell at (617) 244-6050 x3028. 

2. Book & Author Luncheon. The Friends of the  will hold its annual today at the . The luncheon will feature Dennis Lehane and Mitchell Zuckoff. The event kicks off at 11 a.m. with a cash bar, followed by the luncheon, speakers and book signing. . 

3. Guest chef at NSHS. Students at will have a special treat today as a guest chef will be visiting the school and preparing sushi. During the Guest Chef Day, students will have a chance to interact with the chef and choose their own ingredients.

4. Keys to success. One student from will take home a car today from Ray Ciccolo’s Village Automotive Group. A number of select students at the school will be given a key and one winning key will start the car. The giveaway event will be held at Newton North and starts at 11:30 a.m.

5. Sept. 11 memorial fundraiser. The Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee has  to raise money for the future Newton Sept. 11 memorial. To purchase a one- to three-line engraved brick for the walkway to the memorial, fill out the brick form on the committee's website and email it to Jan Huffman at jan@huffmans.net, or make a copy of the form and send it by regular mail with a check for $100 to Jan Huffman, 27 Indiana Terrace Newton, MA 02464.
