Five Things You Need to Know Today: May 30

The YMCA annual meeting, a joint discussion between the aldermen and School Committee and a popular film returns to West Newton.

1. Joint meeting on facilities. The Newton School Committee and Newton Board of Aldermen will meet in a joint meeting tonight to discuss long-term facilities in the schools and city. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. in the library.

2. Tournament update. Congratulations to the boys' varsity volleyball team, who beat Barnstable last night in a South Div. 1 quarterfinal match. The Lions will go on to play a semifinal match on Friday. Meanwhile, a number of other tournament games will take place today for Newton teams, including lacrosse, softball and the #2 Newton North boys' volleyball team. . 

3. YMCA annual meeting. The will hold tonight starting at 5:30 p.m. The evening will include the local YMCA's annual report, awards, a reception as well as an introduction to the Newton Teen Center at the Y, which is a collaboration between the Y and the Newton Partnership.

4. Bowen School faculty retirement celebration. Members of the Bowen community will celebrate the hard work and dedication from Mr. Kemp Harris, Mrs. Stephanie Hoff, and Dr. Libby Sanderson at in the gym. The celebration begins at 4 p.m.

5. Naomi. The Israeli film noir hit, Naomi, will return to the tonight at 7 p.m. The film, directed by Eitan Tzur, was a big hit during the Boston Jewish Film Festival's 2011 festival. Tickets are $15 general admission; $12 for BJFF, Coolidge Corner Theatre, MFA and WGBH members; $10 for groups of at least 10 people formed in advance.
